Event History

FLAME: A Short History Of Europe's Premier Gas & LNG Event

Where Have We Come From?

ICBI first launched Flame in March 1994 and has been held annually in Amsterdam in The Netherlands, making the 2015 event its 21st year running – as such, it is one of Europe's longest running gas event for mid and downstream gas players. In its early years, it attracted about 250 attendees but grew rapidly and is now the largest event of its kind in Europe with over 900 global energy CEOs, board members, strategists, advisors, academics and other leading experts participating each year.

Intellectual capital has always been the cornerstone of ICBI's value proposition – and this is clearly reflected in the Flame agenda. Initially a 2 day, 30 speaker event, the programme has grown considerably over the years and now comprises a 3 day main conference, a pre-conference summit day focusing on LNG and a couple of post summit workshops. Such rapid organic growth, combined with the huge market interest in speaking at the industry's most prestigious event, has expanded the speaker faculty to a record-breaking 110 members this year.

How Has The Event Agenda Evolved?

When we first launched Flame the focus was two-pronged;
1) To provide a senior level platform for the European energy industry to debate critical issues facing the gas sector in Europe and network amongst peers
2) Provide practical, case-studies & strategies on staying ahead of the game in a liberalising market

However, whilst these two elements remain at the heart of the event, the agenda quickly expanded to cover a much wider focus especially as LNG is globalising the gas market – we now pride ourselves in being the premier European meeting place for the global energy industry. Indeed the original 2 stream format has now been superseded by a 4 stream event focusing on the wide range of challenges and opportunities faced by up, mid and downstream players.

For example, some of the core areas include:

  • Where Will Europe's Gas Supplies Come From? Hear From Norway, Qatar, Africa, Russia
  • Prices: Rising Oil Prices, Gas To Gas Pricing And Oil Indexation
  • The Outlook For The Global Economy & Implications For The Energy Markets
  • The Global LNG Markets: Pricing, Arbitrage, Shipping, Spot Markets, Liquefaction & Reg Terminal Updates
  • Gas Competition & Regulation: Update On 3rd Directive And Consolidating Markets
  • Pipeline Infrastructure Update: BBL, Nabucco, Nordstream, Medgaz
  • Gas Demand: Where Is Gas Going To And The Impact Of Climate Change An The Future Fuel Mix – Impact On Gas Of Coal, Carbon, EU ETS
